We often take safe drinking water for granted. Since August is National Water Quality Month, it’s a great time to discuss where our water comes from and how we can preserve it.

Our drinking water comes from lakes, rivers, and groundwater. Protecting these sources from contamination not only protects your drinking water, but also protects the environment. Plus, it saves money and energy and it’s something we can all do!

How to protect your water

1. NEVER DUMP CHEMICALS. Avoid putting products like motor oil, prescription medications, antibacterial household cleaners, paints, bug/pest repellants, and detergents down the drain. These are all toxins that need to be disposed of properly at your solid waste plant.

2. PICK UP PET WASTE. Pet waste removes oxygen from water, causes fecal coliform bacteria and adds nutrients to our waterways that promote algae growth.

3. USE THE CAR WASH. Washing your car at home can flush chemicals down the storm drain and into our lakes and streams. Professional car washes save water and drain into sewer systems where the water is treated before it is re-used.

4. DON’T USE FERTILIZERS/PESTICIDES. Fertilizers and pesticides can run off the soil and contaminate the waterways. Exposure to these chemicals can cause harm to humans and wildlife.

5. CLEAN UP. Join a community clean-up crew for streets, beaches, and rivers. It’s important to educate yourself and learn from others who care about our environment. You can make friends and feel great when you protect your water!

How WE can help improve YOUR water quality

Just because your water comes from a water treatment facility does not mean it is 100% free of contaminants. If you are concerned about impurities in your drinking water, a reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water system is the answer. RO systems effectively reduce harmful water contaminants, turning tap water into convenient, contaminant-free water you can trust.
